Fairtrade Fortnight 2012

Its Fairtrade Fortnight from 27th February to 11th March 2012.

Unlike some supermarkets we could mention, we don’t just buy in Fairtrade products for a big display for the next couple of weeks.  We stock lots of Fairtrade products all year round.

Drop in & check out Fairtrade tea, coffee, chocolate, snack bars, dried fruit, quinoa, honey, biscuits & even cleaning cloths.

Kilbeggan Organic Porridge

So, what have Blasta Wholefoods in common with the world famous Dean & Deluca delis in the US?   Well, a love of great food & keen interest in finding the best artisan delights for a start. More specifically, we are both stockists of Kilbeggan Organic Porridge.

Produced by the Lalor family on their farm in Co. Westmeath, this is arguably the creamiest porridge in the world.  Pat Lalor is the fifth generation of Lalors to have farmed at Kilbeggan since 1844.  You may have heard him talking about his porridge on RTE’s Countrywide last week.

Now you can try it for yourself, €1.90 for 500g.

Pancake Day

Don’t forget that tomorrow is pancake day.

We have a couple of great gluten free pancake mixes & all the different types of flour you’ll need if you want to make your own. We also have all the toppings you can think of, from organic lemon juice & sugar, real maple syrup, agave syrup, honey and a lovely new vanilla bean dusting sugar.

Humphrey’s Corner Baby Toiletries

We have introduced a lovely new range of baby toiletries called Humphrey’s Corner, based on the popular children’s cartoon character by artist Sally Hunter.

They are produced by Faith in Nature, so you can be sure that there are no SLS, no parabens or artificial colours or fragrances.

We have a couple of bubbly baths (calming Chamomile & gentle Rose) and two varieties of gentle shampoo and also a nourishing Shea Butter baby lotion.

Fennel and Lemon Soup

Its been a while since we put a recipe on the website. I was reminded of this one by seeing some lovely plump fennel bulbs and some Bergamot lemons on Siobhan La Touche’s stall on Dungarvan Farmers’ Market last week.  I made this soup for friends at the weekend & it went down really well.
Ingredients:
2 tablespoons Olive oil
1 onion, roughly chopped
2 fennel bulbs, thinly sliced
550 ml chicken or vegetable stock
Grated rind of 1 unwaxed lemon
150 – 300ml milk (optional)
Salt & freshly ground black pepper to season
Fennel leaves to garnish
Method:
Heat the olive oil in a large saucepan. Add the onion and cook gently for 5 minutes or so until its soft but not coloured.  Stir in the sliced fennel.
Add the stock and the grated lemon and bring to the boil. Simmer gently for 20 minutes or so until the fennel is tender.
Transfer into a food processor or blender & and process until smooth. If its a bit thick you can thin it by adding a little more stock (or milk if you want the finished soup to be a bit creamier). Taste and season with salt and black pepper.
Garnish with a spig of fennel leaves and some grated lemon rind. Serve hot or cold.
