Apparently, 31st January is Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day.
We’re huge fans of bubble wrap here at Blasta Wholefoods. On delivery days I have been known to find a quiet corner just to experience that delicious popping sensation when you roll a bit of bubble wrap through your fingers (it also keeps me out of Anne & Mel’s way when they’re moving heavy boxes).
Being lean and green, we’ve never knowingly thrown any bubble wrap away & try to reuse it when we can. This means we always have a box of good quality popping stuff in the stock room. Anyone who can’t get hold of their own supply with which to celebrate bubble wrap appreciation day, please let me know.
As promised, we have now taken our first delivery of Gluten Free bread from the Delicious Gluten Free bakery in Ballincollig.
We think its going to be a hit. Made from corn starch rather than the usual rice, it has a lightness and spring that you don’t normally associate with gluten free breads. Its ready to eat, so there’s no need to toast.
The sliced loaf, which retails at €3.99, has the added benefit of being egg and milk free.
We watched with growing horror the Hugh’s Fish Fight programmes on Channel 4 last week. The EU’s fisheries policies are in an absolute mess – its not just the sheer waste of good quality food that is just breathtaking, but the systematic destruction of small fishing communities.
Having recently been involved in a small way in the fight against the mad EU Food Supplements and Traditional Herbals Directives, I have a good idea about how Byzantine the EU’s procedures are and what an uphill struggle it will be to make a change. Grattan Square is always lively on Thursday mornings, with locals shopping and catching up on the latest gossip and tourists just drinking in the atmosphere of one of the best farmers’ markets in the country.
The market has gone from strength to strength over the last few years and has a great mix of stalls, from Joe Condon’s Organic Beef, Organic Veg from Siobhan LaTouche, Barron’s award winning bakery and (probably) the best hot chocolate in the world.
In fact, its one of the things (in addition to Blasta Wholefoods of course!) that makes Dungarvan a great place to be.

I mentioned a couple of weeks ago that we had discovered the Delicious Gluten Free Bakery from Ballincollig, County Cork.
Their mince pies were to die for & sold like hot cakes (OK, too early in the New Year for such bad puns, but stay with us).
Now for the new year we have some of their fantastic hand made Gluten Free biscuit bars. The four varieties are - Chocolate Tiffin, Coconut Macaroons, Crunchy Flapjacks and Brownies.
We’ve been promised Gluten Free bread from the same bakery for next week & if that’s anything like their other products we should be in for a treat.
A very Happy New Year to one & all. Our ten day break seemed absolutely to fly by & it already feels like we were never away.
The Milk Thistle seems to be selling slightly more quickly than the chocolate this morning, so it looks like most people had the same sort of Christmas & New Year as we did.
We’ve started the year as we mean to go on and are already on the look out for new and interesting products. We are going to make an extra special effort to source more Irish Artisan Foods for 2011 as they proved so popular last year. We’ll keep you posted of progress in the coming weeks.
