Atlantic Aromatics Competition Winner

We had more than 160 entries for our Atlantic Aromatics compettition run as part of our 5th Birthday celebrations last week.  A big thank you to everyone who took part.

The first name out of the hat was Anne Power from Ballinamult.  Anne, who is pictured (left) with Anne Whinnett from Blasta Wholefoods,  won  a basket of Atlantic Aromatics goodies worth €50.00+

Well done Anne and thanks again to Atlantic Aromatics for their support.

Waterford Festival of Food Roundup

We had a fantastic weekend here in Dungarvan for the Waterford Festival of Food.  Due to the great line up and even better weather the crowds were bigger than ever this year.

Our in-store tastings went very well indeed.  Beal Cheese was particularly popular due to their exposure on Dragons’ Den a few weeks ago.  A very special thank you to Cathy Whitty from Cathy’s Spelt for Health.  Cathy and her husband drove down from Wicklow to be with us on Saturday  and her spelt bread and flapjack mixes went down an absolute storm.  We’ve never before had such a popular in store event.

Jess Keane and Eunice Power’s session on superfoods at the Town Hall on Saturday afternoon was very popular.  We had very good feedback from people who attended, and sold out of Quinori within 15 minutes of their talk ending!  Paul Flynn & Neven McGuire’s sessions also seemed to be highlights of the festival.

On Sunday we were with the Dungarvan GIY Group at the giant Farmers market on the Square.  The kids bean planting event was a great success and we signed up lots of new potential GIY members.  We got a great buzz from showing loads of Pre-School and National School teachers how to make newspaper  plant pots and germinate seeds with their classes.  So, who knows, we may even have started a new generation of GIYers.

Its sprouting season again and Mel, who works with us, has come up with this tasty sprouted seed & potato salad.  Mel uses a Vogel Biosnacky germinator & always has a good supply of fresh sprouts.  She’s always looking for lots of imaginative ways of using sprouts, particularly to get young daughter to eat them.

10 boiled new potatoes (sliced)
1 spoon of mayonnaise
1 teaspoon of Lemon juice
A handful of spouted seeds (Mel used broccoli, alfalfa, cress & green lentils)
Salt & pepper
5 black olives (halved)
5 sun blush or sun dried tomatoes

Simply mix together the ingredients and enjoy!

Happy Birthday Blasta!

Its our fifth birthday and we are celebrating all this week with tastings, competitions special offers & giveaways.  As its also Waterford Festival of Food week , all of our in store tastings are of Irish Artisan Foods.

On Thursday April 15th we are offering tastings of Beal Orgainc Cheddar (of Dragons’ Den fame) together with Baking Emporium Seeded Spelt Crackers from Co. Cork and Filligan’s Chutney.  The Filligan’s range is handmade by a small family company from Co. Donegal and is about the best we’ve tasted.   We started stocking it just before last Christmas and it has been a real hit.

On Friday April 16th we have Catherine Hickey from Co Cork based food company Posh Nosh in store to do tastings of their award winning salad dressings.  The White Balsamic dressing is pretty hard to beat.

That’s followed on Saturday April 17th with a visit from Cathy of Cathy’s Spelt for Health.  She will be offering tastings of her great Spelt bread and flapjack mixes.

Also on Saturday, Jess Keane and Eunice Power will be be giving a demo of “Super Foods Made Simple”at Dungarvan Town Hall at 2.00pm – 4.00pm.   They will be joined by Druid Chef Ruairi O’Morachain and will be using lots of superfoods from our store.  Tickets are €5.00 from the Festival Box Office at Grattan Square in Dungarvan.

If  that’s not enough, our own Anne Whinnett has been scouring the recipe books and will be offering a different home made cake or cookie every day this week.  Yesterday we had Garam Massala biscuits from a Green Saffron recipe & they went down a storm.

GIY at Waterford Festival of Food

The Waterford Festival of Food takes place in and around Dungarvan from 16th – 18th April.  As part of the line up for this year’s Festival  there will be a workshop led by GIY founder Michael Kelly.

Also, GIY Dungarvan will have a stall at the giant Farmers’ and Country Market on Sunday 18th.  We will be encouraging kids to start their own veg garden with a bean seed planted in a home made newspaper pot. We’ll be encouraging the grown ups to join GIY at the same time.  If you are interested in growing your own veg, come along to meet us.

Further details about the festival are available from and further info about GIY is available from

Anyone watching last night’s Dragons’ Den programme on RTE will have seen Kate Carmody, maker of Beal Organic Cheddar Cheese secure a major investment in her product.

It was amazing to see Kate turn the table on the dragons who had to work very hard indeed to meet her very exacting standards before she would accept their investment!

Kate has been making her award winning Irish Organic Cheddar since 1997 with milk produced at her own farm in Beal near Ballybunion Co. Kerry.  We have been stocking this great cheese since shortly before Christmas and everyone who has tasted it so far is impressed.

We’ll be offering free tasings of Beal Organic Cheddar alongside a number  of other Irish Artisan foods during the Waterford Festival of Food from 16th – 18th April.  More details to follow next week…..
