Magic Mayan Raw Chocolate

We have some exciting news for chocolate lovers.  We’re pleased to say that our stocks of Magic Mayan handmade raw chocolate have now arrived.

Made by Darren, Sinead and Nathan O’Connor in Ennis Co. Clare, this has to be the best raw chocolate we’ve ever tasted.

As you’d expect, it’s gluten free, dairy free & soya free.  Cleverly, they use a touch of  low GI coconut sugar to sweeten, which gives a lovely rounded caramel flavour.

We’ve tasted lots of raw chocolate in the last couple of years and much of it is pretty meh to be honest. Magic Mayan is very different.  The flavour and, importantly, the texture is spot on.

Don’t believe me though, try one of the six flavours for yourself.  But please don’t take all of the Always Almond (made with salted, roast almonds) – thats Anne’s favourite & she’ll not be happy if we run out.

One of the great things about playing shop for a living is that I get search out new products and share them with like minded folk who I know are going to be just as excited as I am.  Today I’m even more excited than usual because I’ve discovered Velvet Cloud, an Irish Sheep’s milk yoghurt fresh from the farm.

We’ve been stocking sheep’s yoghurts for some time now because they are higher in calcium, zinc, vitamins A B C &  E and protein. More importantly, many of our customers find them much easier to digest than regular cow’s milk yoghurts.  That’s because the fat molecules in sheep’s milk are smaller, more homogeneous and therefore are easier to digest.

The French sheep’s yoghurt we’ve been stocking is of really excellent quality, but I always thiought it woud be nice to stock an Irish product if I could. I haven’t been able to find an Irish one, until now…

The Flanagan family’s Rockfield Dairy is just 8km outside Claremorris in Co Mayo.  They have been sheep farmers for generations, but their Velvet Cloud is brand new to the market.  It is a wonderfully  mild & creamy yoghurt pruduced on a real farm by  happy sheep.  What more could you need?

Our friends Marek Koziol & Michelle Delaney from Knockmealdown Honey are featured in this month’s An Beachaire (The Irish Beekeeper Magazine) with their fabulous honey & beeswax based Tilly’s lip balm, hand cream & dry skin salve.

I’m not surprised that this couple are creating a buzz (sorry) because they are absolutely passionate about what they do.

As always, we are only too happy to promote small local producers, so Marek & Michelle will be in store on Thursday 13th August from 10.30 til 1.30 so you can try their wonderful handmade products for yourself.

Don’t leave without tasting some of the finest honey you’ve probably ever had.

Shines of Killybegs

There’s something fishy going on at Blasta Wholefoods these days.

We’ve just become the latest stockists of a new range from Shines Seafood of Killybegs.

We have Silver Darlings Nordic style pickled Herrings & my personal favourite Irish caught Tuna in olive oil.

This is Tuna like I’ve never tasted before – Albacore rather than the more common Skipjack or Yellowfin varieties. The Albacore Tuna is much smaller, higher in Omega 3 & more importantly has a much better flavour.

I tried it in a salad with some finely chopped red onion & capers. Ab Fab as they (probably don’t) say in Killybegs.

Joan & Bob are a husband and wife team with a passion for preserving.  From their kitchen in Thomastown, County Kilkenny they produce an impressive range of jams, jellies, chutneys & sauces.  Everything is hand made in small batches using seasonal fruit and hand picked wild berries.

The labels are quite literally works of art as they feature pen drawings, designs and recipe suggestions produced by the couple themselves, who are both fine artists.

Joan is pictured here with our first delivery of Joan & Bob’s products.

We are now pleased to stock Apple Jelly, Mint Jelly, Horseradish sauce with brandy, a rich Tomato Sauce and a fantastic Wild Garlic Pesto. To complete the range, we have three no added sugar jams – including a Black Grape, Berry & Bordeaux.

Green Bowl Frozen Wheatgrass Shots

Sometimes the simplest ideas are the best.

We’ve just discovered the Green Bowl Company who grow, juice & blast freeze wheatgrass on their farm in Cahir, Co Tipperary.

They then package the wheatgrass juice into frozen pouches about the size of an ice cube, Each pack contains 24 frozen pouches of fresh wheatgrass juice, which gives you a 12 day supply for just €19.99.

This takes all the hassle out of growing wheatgrass, juicing & cleaning the juicer. So you can now find your little shot of goodness in the freezer each morning.
